The 1st XV will have breathed a sigh of relief to have held on to a vital 26-24 win at Cardiff Met in a WRU Admiral Community Premiership fixture.
Despite the Met taking the early lead with a converted try, Beddau hit back and had reached the bonus point score before half time thanks to efforts from Ewan Roberts, Noah Davey, Jack Davis, and the award of a penalty try. Ollie Wilde kicked two of the conversions to put the Green and Golds in what looked like a comfortable position with a 26-7 half time lead.
The students though came out strongly in the second half and after kicking an early penalty they pushed on to score two further converted tries to make for a nail-biting finale. But not for the first time this season Beddau’s determination to defend and ground out a win was clear and they held out to return from Cyncoed with another full five league points.
Although it was not the best display of the season there can be a lot to be taken from the game as they build to what is a huge game this weekend against Merthyr at Mount Pleasant Park. Jack Little was named the New Culture Coffee Shop player of the match, and it was so pleasing for everyone at the Club to finally see the talented young centre Ioan Leyshon (pictured) in senior colours for the first time.
The Athletic were again in fine form as they kept up their 100% league record and remained top of Division Six East Central by defeating a battling St Peters Athletic 61-12 at MPP.
Scrum half Luke Jones lead the try scoring with a hat-trick, whilst his half back partner Efan Jones crossed twice and James Davies who played in the centre also went over for a brace. Skipper Christian Bird also crossed for a good score as did Luke Bennett. Efan Jones who was named the Fagins Player of the March also kicked eight conversions in another fine performance.
Next up for the Athletic is the visit of Bridgend Athletic to Yorkdale this Saturday in another league game which will kick off at mid-day.
The Youth XV got the result that their efforts have deserved over recent weeks as they lowered the colours of Llandaff in the capital.
There was a hat-trick of scores for prop Wojtek Kudelka, whilst the impressive Alfie John crossed the whitewash twice. Jac Jones completed the try scoring with another fine try. Marcus Preston and Ashley Peck both slotted a conversion each to take the final score to 34-5 to the young Green and Golds.
The win sees Beddau climb up to fourth place in the Cardiff Division Two, but the pleasing aspect for the coaches is the continued improvement of the group.
A special mention must go out to Youth team player Samson Philpott who was selected to play for the Crawshays on Saturday at Weston Hornets. Samson who has been an integral part of the youth team this season put in a fine performance and managed to cross for a try. Well done and congratulations Samson from all at the Club.
There were more representative honours for former M&J players of the Club over the weekend as Livy Kuropatwa and Sienna Mccormack appeared for Wales Under 18s in their final Six Nations warm up fixture against Scotland in Edingburgh. Well done once again to the girls.
Our mini and juniors were once again in good action over the weekend. A huge thanks go out to teams from Pontypridd, Dowlais and Barry who made the trip over to Beddau and to Tonyrefail who kindly hosted our under 12s. There was plenty of quality and fun rugby on show. As usual our thanks to all the volunteers who make this happen week in week out.
