Great Weekend For Green & Golds

Great Weekend For Green & Golds

Jamie Willis18 Jan - 15:47

97 senior players took to the field this Saturday as our teams enjoyed more successful results.

The 1st XV travelled to old Mid District rivals Bargoed in another WRU Admiral WRU Community Premiership fixture and will be more than happy with a 33-29 win and what was a season double over their established Premier hosts.

Beddau started stronger and after some good forward pressure, a good pass from Lewis Jones found centre Adam Ashford hitting a great angle to score under the posts for a try that pivot Ollie Wilde converted.

The hosts were soon back into the game and an infringement in front of the posts allowed them to reduce the deficit to 7-3 with a penalty goal from Josh Prosser. Bargoed at this point were having most of the possession and they worked space to allow full back Dylan Williams to score a nice try out wide to take the lead with an unconverted try.

In the closing moments of the opening period, Beddau came back strong. Again, the Beddau eight put pressure on their opponents and a deft pass from scrum half Jones gave winger Cameron Ellis time and space to get over at the corner. Ellis’ score gave Beddau a 12-8 interval lead.

Beddau started the second half on the front foot and after more pressure from the Beddau forwards, Lewis Jones found a hole in the home teams defence to dance over for a try that his half back partner Wilde converted.

Again, Bargoed didn’t lie down and just six minutes later they were back in the game thanks to a well worked converted try. Step forward Beddau again and the experienced Lewis Jones grabbed his second try of the game which Wilde converted to give the Green and Golds a try scoring bonus point.

Beddau kept the pressure on and after a strong driving maul on the home teams try line, hooker Joe Page crashed over the line for another score that Wilde converted. With just fifteen minutes to play the visitors looked like they were home and dry, but the hosts made some changes which brought a tight conclusion to affairs.

Two late tries and a conversion from Bargoed brought a nail-biting end but brave defence from the Green and Golds prevailed to help them to a hard fought 33-29 win.

Beddau’s forwards worked tirelessly throughout, the defensive display back row of Sam Tiley, Ellis Evans and Sam Gibson was outstanding particularly in the first half. The backs despite fielding a makeshift centre pairing kept their opponents on their toes and can once again can be proud of their efforts.

Next up is a re-arranged league game at Newbridge next weekend where a win would see Beddau go to the summit of the Community Premiership.

The Club wishes to put on record they’re thanks to all at Bargoed RFC particularly hard-working Chair Neil Carter and President Robert Butcher for the welcome they received.

The Athletic made the trip down to Tondu Athletic for what was expected to be their toughest Division Six East Central league test to date and it certainly proved to be that.

Cian Evans, James Davies and the sharp feet of Scott Bishop got Beddau’s tries, with Owen Cotter slotting two conversions and a penalty to give Beddau a hugely important 22-15 win.

The win keeps Beddau’s 100% record and top place in the table and extends their lead over second place Kenfig Hill to five points and third place Tondu by six points. Next up is another tough game against St Peters Athletic at Mount Pleasant Park next Saturday.

The Colliers once again put on an excellent display to beat a good Penallta Athletic 22-5 win at MPP.

All twenty-two points for Beddau came in the first half with Luke Davies, Ethan Forkin, Harri Abercrombie and Joel Joseph all crossing the whitewash with Shaun Bennett slotting a conversion.

Beddau made numerous changes at the interval but held strong throughout to record a well deserved win as they prepare for a home derby fixture with Llantwit Fardre in a fortnight.

Samson Philpott crossed for a brace of tries to go with a good Kellan Thomas score and a conversion and penalty by Marcus Preston for the Youth, but it wasn’t to be as they were pipped 22-20 by Tylorstown in the Rhondda.

The young Green and Golds started their transitional period from under 16s to youth with four sixteen-year-olds in the match day squad.

The effort from the Beddau team was again first class and it is only a matter of time before performances turn into results for this group.

Congratulations are again sent out to all our mini and junior players who were involved in games on Sunday. Once again they showed the future is bright for the Club.
