Match Day Welcome

Jamie Willis25 Apr - 10:05

Below are the welcome programme notes for today’s big derby day clash.

Prynhawn da a chroeso cynnes i Parc Mynydd Pleserus

This is the big one.

Since our promotion to the WRU Admiral Community Premiership twelve months ago, this has been the fixture we have all been waiting for.

Just 3.3 miles separate our two proud clubs, yet for many years there has been a significant gap in the level at which each has competed. For Beddau to now be not only sharing the same stage as Pontypridd but truly competing in the elite tier of the community game in Wales, is something that would have seemed unlikely just a few seasons ago.

Midweek results have added another twist to the title race, with Merthyr’s victory over Llanelli Wanderers seeing them move above both us and Pontypridd. However, this remains a three-horse race very much, with another huge encounter to come next week as Pontypridd host Merthyr at Sardis Road.

Beddau’s rise to this level is no accident. It is the result of years of hard work, commitment, and belief from everyone involved in the club. From players and coaches to volunteers and supporters, so many have played their part in this journey—and we thank each one of you. The aim now is simple: to keep progressing and to establish ourselves as one of the leading community clubs in Wales.

There are deep connections between the two clubs, adding even more significance to today’s occasion. Players have proudly worn both the green and gold and the black and white, families find themselves divided, and even among sponsors there are loyalties on both sides. Special mention goes to Phil Miles and Mike Edwards—connections that highlight just how intertwined these two clubs are. It all adds to the unique and special atmosphere surrounding this fixture.

Our Boxing Day clash at Sardis Road remains fresh in the memory—a thrilling encounter witnessed by a huge crowd, with Pontypridd narrowly edging a fantastic game. The scale of that support and the quality of rugby on display have been talked about across the valleys ever since.

Today promises more of the same. This fixture represents everything that is great about Welsh rugby—fierce rivalry on the pitch and in the stands, followed by respect, camaraderie, and friendship afterwards.

A huge amount of work has gone into organising today’s game, and we extend our sincere thanks to everyone who has contributed behind the scenes. The players and coaching staff are fully aware of the occasion and will be determined to deliver a performance that reflects the pride of this club and community.

We are also delighted to welcome our sponsors, whose support continues to play a vital role in our journey. There are too many to mention individually, but each one of you is greatly appreciated.

At half-time today, our Athletic XV will be presented with the WRU Division Six East Central Winners Trophy, having secured the title with a 100% record—an outstanding achievement and another proud moment for the club. With the Colliers also enjoying success, there is every reason to believe more silverware could be on the horizon.

We extend a warm welcome to everyone associated with Pontypridd RFC and look forward to a fiercely competitive contest. We also welcome today’s match referee, Mr Carwyn Sion, along with his assistant Mr Tony Davies.

As always, our club and community come together in support of the team. Enjoy the occasion, take pride in what has already been achieved, and look ahead with excitement to what promises to be a very bright future.
