Mixed Fortunes For Green & Golds / Weekend Round up

Mixed Fortunes For Green & Golds / Weekend Round up

Jamie Willis27 Oct - 09:22

It was a weekend of different fortunes for our senior teams, but it again showed the improvements that have been made in a short period.

The 1st XV remain unbeaten this season but agonisingly got eliminated from the WRU Premiership Cup on try count after a 17-17 draw with Neath at Mount Pleasant Park.

After racing into a 17-0 first half lead thanks to tries from front row men Travis Green and Ethan Coombes plus two conversions and a penalty from Callaghan Smith, Beddau looked in total control.

But in the closing period of the first half with the green and golds one man short due to a sin binning, the visitors scored two good tries of which one was converted to bring them right back into the game.

The second half, just like the league encounter two weeks ago, was a real tussle with no side giving the opposition many opportunities.

But with just a couple of minutes remaining on the clock Neath breached the line to score a third try. Beddau knew they had to score at this point to reach the semi-final as at 17-17, the Welsh All Blacks were leading 3-2 on try count which would judge the winner in the first instance in competition rulings.

Beddau went chasing the win and at the death, Neath infringed and Beddau were awarded a penalty. As like two weeks ago young Ollie Wilde was trusted with the attempt at a difficult goal to win the game, but unfortunately this time the linesman's flags stayed down, and the referee blew the final whistle.

It was a disappointing draw in the end but once again measured how far the green and golds have come in a short period and will see them going into the third month of the season still without a loss.

It was great to see so many at MPP again. Included in the crowd was former Wales, Beddau and Neath scrum half Chris Bridges and the family numbers of Gareth "Snid" Jones who played with distinction for both clubs.

Bob Gay of Bob Gay Plant Hire/ Woodland Walk garden centre who kindly sponsored the game presented the sponsors man of the match to Leon Rogers (pictured). The Clubs man of the match award was presented to Danny Perry.

The 1st XV have a weekend off from Community Premiership action next weekend, but the break will be a point where they can focus on what will possibly be the hardest away game of the season at Merthyr on November 8th.

The Athletic also remain unbeaten in competitive action after an excellent 30-10 win at Bangor in the second round of the WRU Division Five Cup.

The long trip up North didn't stop Beddau's young chargers from continuing their good recent run as they ran in four good tries.

Travis Warhurst (2), Josh Thomas, and Harri Jones all crossed the whitewash against a competitive Bangor outfit. Owain Cotter had another good afternoon with the boot slotting a conversion and two penalties to book the Ath's slot in the 3rd round draw.

The Club wishes to thank all those that helped support with the Athletics heavy financial travel costs to North Wales.

There is currently no Athletic league game next weekend so all the attention will turn to the Colliers who make the short trip to Llantwit Fardre for a Mid District league fixture.

Despite travelling to Penallta with a depleted squad the Youth put up a battling performance before going down 17-10 in the WRU Bowl 2nd round.

Ioan Leyshon again impressed scoring a try, conversion, and penalty in the loss.

Despite this reverse this young group continue to show plenty of promise and improvement.

The Youth are also currently without a fixture this weekend, but we will keep you posted on any changes.

There were further encouraging signs on Sunday wuth our mini and juniors again putting in some fantastic displays.
