Over recent seasons, the club has become one of the leading community rugby clubs in Wales, combining success across all levels of the game with a genuine commitment to improving the lives of people throughout the village.

While Beddau’s rugby programme continues to flourish, the club has worked equally hard to create projects that benefit not only its players, but the wider community.

Today, the club proudly fields three senior men's, a thriving Youth side and a Mini & Junior section with more than 250 boys and girls playing every weekend. Across every age group, participation continues to grow, creating a strong pathway from grassroots rugby through to the senior game.

That growth has been built on much more than coaching and recruitment.

The club has worked tirelessly to create a welcoming, inclusive environment where members, supporters, volunteers and sponsors all feel part of something special. That sense of togetherness has become one of Beddau RFC’s greatest strengths.

Creating a Lasting Community Legacy

Several years ago, the committee recognised that the club had an opportunity to become more than simply a place where rugby was played.

Like many former mining communities, Beddau has faced its share of challenges since the closure of Cwm Colliery in 1986. Rather than waiting for others to make improvements, the club made a conscious decision to become part of the solution.

Club Treasurer Leon Prosser, who has helped lead many of the club’s community initiatives, explained:

“We realised that if we wanted things to improve for our community, we had to start making that difference ourselves. Rugby clubs have always been at the heart of Welsh communities and we wanted Beddau RFC to play an even bigger role in village life.”

That vision led to one of the club’s proudest achievements — the creation of the Green & Gold Suite at Mount Pleasant Park.

The Green & Gold Suite

With the clubhouse located some distance from the playing fields, the club identified the need for a permanent multi-purpose facility at the ground.

Rather than embarking on an expensive new build, members came together with an innovative solution.

An unused shipping container was sourced by one of the club’s sponsors and transported to Mount Pleasant Park. From there, what followed became a true community project.

Players, coaches, volunteers, local tradespeople and sponsors all donated their time, skills, materials and expertise.

Groundworks were completed by volunteers, the container was transformed with a new roof, windows, doors and disabled access, while the interior was fully fitted out to create a warm, welcoming space overlooking the pitch.

Much of the work was carried out during evenings and weekends by people giving up their own time simply because they believed in the project.

Prosser added:

“What made the project so special was that everybody felt they owned it. People were contributing ideas, skills and countless hours of work. It became something the whole community was proud of.”

Showcasing Local Talent

The finishing touch came from talented local artist Ellie Loren Jones, herself from a proud Beddau rugby family, who created stunning artwork within the facility.

Her contribution perfectly reflected what the project stood for — celebrating local people and showcasing the talent that already exists within the community.

Much More Than Matchdays

Originally designed as a matchday hospitality and viewing facility, the Green & Gold Suite has evolved into something far greater.

Today it is used throughout the year by community organisations, charities and support groups, including 4 Dewi Mental Health and Active 4 Blood, while educational sessions, wellbeing programmes and community meetings regularly take place within the facility.

The suite has become a safe, welcoming space for people of all ages and backgrounds, reinforcing the club’s belief that rugby clubs should be community hubs, not simply sporting venues.

Continuing to Invest in the Future

The Green & Gold Suite is just one of several projects completed by Beddau RFC.

The club has also created a dedicated children’s play area at its clubhouse, invested heavily in facilities for its growing Mini & Junior section and continues to improve both Mount Pleasant Park and the clubhouse for members and visitors alike.

These developments have only been possible thanks to the remarkable support of volunteers, sponsors and local businesses, together with guidance from the Welsh Rugby Union’s Club Development Team.

More Than a Rugby Club

As Beddau RFC looks to the future, the ambition remains unchanged.

The club wants to continue developing successful rugby teams while ensuring that every improvement made leaves a lasting benefit for the community.

Prosser concluded:

“We’re incredibly proud of what we’ve achieved together, but we’re only getting started. Everything we’ve built has been driven by volunteers, members, sponsors and supporters who care deeply about this club and this village.

“If we can continue bringing people together, creating opportunities and making a positive difference in our community, then we’ll always feel we’re succeeding — regardless of what happens on the rugby field.”

For Beddau RFC, rugby remains at the heart of everything they do.

But perhaps their greatest achievement is proving that a community club can inspire, unite and make a lasting difference far beyond the touchline.
