The 1st XV returned to the summit of the WRU Admiral Community Premiership with a commanding 45–0 victory over Brecon, taking full advantage of Merthyr and Pontypridd not being in action to leapfrog both sides at the top of the table.
In what proved to be a highly physical contest, Beddau laid the platform with an outstanding defensive display, repelling everything Brecon threw at them throughout the match. The visitors showed resilience and kept coming, but Beddau’s organisation and intensity ensured they were never able to breach the line.
The hosts struck three times in a dominant first half. Hooker Lloyd James opened the scoring, powering over from a well-executed catch and drive. The second try came through wing James Davies, who finished off a period of sustained forward pressure following a sharp break and clever pass from flanker Sam Gibson. Centre Tyler Wells added Beddau’s third, capitalising on a superb midfield break from scrum-half Callaghan Smith, who created the space for Wells to beat his man and cross. Ollie Wilde added the extras to give Beddau a 17–0 lead at the interval.
Beddau continued their momentum early in the second half, with young Ioan Leyshon showing great strength to crash over for the bonus-point try, converted again by Wilde. Moments later, Sam Gibson produced a moment of brilliance—hacking a loose ball forward from his own half before regathering and sprinting under the posts for a superb individual score, also converted by the pivot Wilde.
Lloyd James then claimed his second try of the afternoon—and his fourth against Brecon this season—after Sam Bixby was stopped just short, with the hooker picking up to power over from close range. Wilde maintained his good record from the tee. The scoring was completed by Sam Tiley, who deservedly crossed after a well-worked move from the backs was halted just short, with quick recycling allowing him to charge over. Wilde again added the conversion to round off the scoring at 45–0.
To their credit, Brecon continued to battle and held Beddau out for the final fifteen minutes, preventing any further additions to the scoreboard.
Overall, it was an excellent all-round performance from Beddau, combining clinical attacking play with a rock-solid defensive effort. They now turn their attention to next weekend’s trip to Narberth, where they will look to maintain their position at the top of the table.
The New Culture Coffee Shop Player of the match was prop forward Sam Bixby and the sponsors Player of the match was awarded to Tyler Wells.
The Colliers booked their place in the Ivor Williams Cup Final for the third consecutive season after a dramatic 27–27 draw with Abercynon at Y Parc, progressing on try count in a fiercely contested semi-final.
In what proved to be a gripping and physical encounter, the Colliers’ young side showed tremendous character and composure against a strong Abercynon outfit, matching them throughout and ultimately doing just enough to edge through.
Beddau’s tries came from Christian Bird, Lewis David, Corrie Tarrant and captain Luke Davies, each effort reflecting the side’s attacking intent and willingness to take the game to their opponents. Kalum Bundy added two crucial conversions, while Alfie Egan slotted a vital penalty that proved decisive in ensuring the Colliers stayed level on the scoreboard.
Abercynon pushed hard throughout on home soil and ensured the contest went right to the wire, but Beddau’s ability to find four tries ultimately proved the difference, allowing them to advance under cup rules despite the scores being level at full time.
The result maintains the Colliers’ unbeaten run and continues an impressive cup journey, with the squad once again rising to the challenge in a high-pressure knockout fixture.
The Colliers will now face Mountain Ash in the final, after they overcame Llantrisant in the other semi-final. The date and venue for the final are yet to be confirmed, but the Colliers will head into the showpiece occasion full of confidence as they look to go one step further.
THANK YOU
A huge thank you to Llantrisant Male Voice Choir for entertaining everyone back at the Clubhouse after the 1st XV game. It was a really special moment and they even shared the stage with some of our players (pictured) giving a song. We look forward to welcoming you back at HQ in the not to distant future.
