Weekend Preview

Weekend Preview

Jamie Willis16 Jan - 10:14

There are league games this weekend for our 1st, Athletic and Youth XV’s, whilst the Colliers have arranged a home friendly.

The 1st XV will head up towards the Rhymney Valley to face fellow Mid District outfit Bargoed in the WRU Community Premiership.

The Green and Golds will be hoping it will be third time lucky after their opening two games of 2026 have been postponed due to frozen and waterlogged grounds. The hosts though have already played once this year and that was a 33-29 win over Narberth on the Ystrad Mynach 4g on January 3rd.

Beddau produced one of their best performances of the season when Bargoed travelled to MPP at the end of September, where they recorded an excellent bonus point 26-0 win.
Scrum half Lewis Jones grabbed a try double that afternoon with Ollie Wilde and Cody Baker also crossing the tryline. Wilde added three of the four conversions. A similar performance to that will be needed this weekend if they are to keep the pressure on league leaders Pontypridd who entertain Llangenench.

Bargoed will also be keen to record what would be a seventh win of the campaign and move up from their fifth-place position.

Head coach Lee Davies has made changes from the team that was due to travel to Newbridge last weekend. Up front hooker Ethan Coombes returns whilst Lewis Jones, Bailey Roberts and Cameron Ellis are all included in the back division. On the bench there is a call up for prop Gerwyn Powell after some good recent performances with the Athletic.

Kick-off is 2.30pm
Match referee is Mr. Marcus Caudle and his assistant Lee Parry.

The Athletic XV have a tough and important top of the WRU Division Six East Central table clash with third placed Tondu Athletic.

With the news breaking last week that sadly Sully Sports cannot fulfil their remaining league fixtures this season and that all results involving them would be expunged, the top three places in the table are very tight.

Beddau still sit top with twenty-eight points from six games played, whilst Kenfig Hill Athletic hold second place with twenty-seven points from seven games. Third placed Tondu Athletic are just three points off the top from their six games played.

Beddau remain unbeaten and are the only team to have lowered the colours of their hosts on Saturday after a tight 17-8 win at MPP back in October.

Coaches Jason Powell, Dean Barnes, and Tom Preece have picked a side that includes the returning Ieuan Williams at number eight and winger James Davies who will be looking to regain some fitness after sustaining a nasty injury on Boxing Day. As part of the Clubs transition policy prop Wojtek Kudelka will step up from youth team rugby to get his first taste of senior league rugby from the bench.

The Colliers scheduled home Mid District league fixture with Llantrisant has been put back until later in the season at the request of our near neighbours but have been fortunate to arrange a late friendly fixture at MPP against Penallta Athletic.

It will be a well needed run out for the squad who will contain some well known old faces this weekend and will be captained by Ellis Dodd.

Penallta Athletic have always been a strong and competitive outfit and are enjoying a good season in the WRU Division Six East league where they sit in second place having won four of their five fixtures.

BEDDAU COLLIERS -

The Youth XV will also be hoping to finally get back on the paddock after being hampered by postponements in the New Year.

They will be travelling to Tylorstown for a re-arranged Cardiff Rugby Division Two fixture.

Flanker George Coombs will captain a promising looking outfit.

BEDDAU YOUTH –
B. Lee, Z. Luke, L. Owttrim, A. John, J. Taylor, M. Preston, J. Jones, J. Davies, J. Adams, M. Williams, K. Thomas, D. Balchan, E. Thomas, G. Coombs ©, S. Philpot. Reps – C. Liddon, S. Stacey, J. Murray, J. Abercrombie, C. Marks, A. Peck, A. Abercrombie, L. Giles.

On Sunday, our mini and junior teams will once again be out in action. There are several games scheduled around the playing fields in Beddau as well as some away fixtures. Good luck to all our Bulldogs.
