Weekend Preview

Jamie Willis23 Jan - 10:42

The 1st, Athletic and Youth XV’s are all in action this Saturday but the Colliers have a weekend off.

The 1st XV could go to the top of the WRU Admiral Community Premiership on Saturday evening if they can lower the colours of Newbridge at their Welfare ground in a re-arranged league fixture.

This league fixture was postponed two weeks ago due to a waterlogged ground, and it is hoped that after this week’s adverse weather there won’t be a similar occurrence this weekend.

Beddau came out on top in the reverse fixture at Mount Pleasant Park in September with a well deserved 33-5 win and will be hoping for a similar performance this weekend to take the top spot from Pontypridd who are without a fixture.

The hosts currently occupy tenth spot in the table but a win on Saturday would see them rise up two places and give a bit of daylight from the relegation spots currently occupied by Llanelli Wanderers and Brecon.

Beddau will be buoyed by a sold 33-29 win at Bargoed last weekend with head coach Lee Davies making five changes to the starting line-up from that victory. In the front row Lloyd James comes in at hooker. Chris Phillips moves across the scrum to tight head to allow Sam Bixby to return at loosehead. In the second row the experienced Hemi Barnes returns allowing Danny Perry to move to blind side.

Behind the scrum, Callaghan Smith is selected at scrum half and James Davies makes his first outing for the first team after a nasty injury sustained in the Boxing Day game at Pontypridd.

The Athletic XV will be hoping to keep their 100% WRU Division Six East Central record intact when they entertain fifth place St Peters Athletic at Mount Pleasant Park.

The green and golds will be hoping to also build on an excellent away win at third place at Tondu Athletic last weekend and extend their five-point lead at the top of the table.

The teams have already met once this season with Beddau returning from the Cardiff Clubs ground after a big 71-5 win.

Luke Jones will again skipper the side that contains two changes from the important win at Tondu. Second row Harri Jones returns and Owen Rix is brought back into the back line on the wing.

The Youth XV are in friendly action as they welcome Senghenydd Youth to Yorkdale.

The young green and golds put on a good display at Tylorstown last weekend before being pipped 22-20 by the Rhondda outfit.

They will be looking to continue their transitional period from junior rugby to Youth rugby this weekend as they name a twenty eight player squad against a “Sneggy” outfit who compete in the Dragons Division One league.
