Mixed Fortunes for Beddau as Athletic and Youth Secure Impressive Victories

It was a weekend of contrasting fortunes for Beddau RFC, with the 1st XV suffering a heavy defeat at the hands of reigning champions Merthyr, while both the Athletic and Youth sides recorded excellent away victories to maintain their impressive starts to the season.

The Athletic XV returned from Caerau Ely with another valuable league victory, while the Youth XV produced a superb attacking display to register 55 unanswered points at Abercwmboi.

1st XV: Merthyr 40–0 Beddau

WRU Admiral Community Premiership

Beddau’s visit to The Wern ended in disappointment as an outstanding Merthyr performance saw the home side run out deserved 40–0 winners.

The final scoreline, however, did not tell the whole story of the opening exchanges, with Beddau enjoying the better of the first quarter and taking the game to the reigning champions.

The Green and Golds started brightly, competing well and looking to impose themselves on their hosts. For the opening 20 minutes, Beddau were very much on top and appeared capable of causing the home side problems.

However, Merthyr gradually worked their way into the contest and, once they found their rhythm, produced a tremendous performance that ultimately blew Beddau away.

The champions demonstrated exactly why they are regarded as one of the strongest sides in the division, combining physicality, organisation and attacking quality to take control of proceedings.

Despite Beddau’s promising start, the home side proved far too strong as the contest developed, eventually running out convincing and thoroughly deserving winners.

For Beddau, it was a disappointing afternoon and one from which lessons will need to be learned. Having made such an encouraging start to the campaign, the Green and Golds will be determined to respond positively.

The result leaves Beddau in sixth position in the Premiership table with 17 points from five matches, having recorded three victories and two defeats.

Attention now turns to next Saturday’s home encounter with Bargoed at Mount Pleasant Park, where Beddau will be looking to return to winning ways.

Athletic XV: Caerau Ely 14–22 Beddau Athletic

WRU Admiral Division Five East Central

Beddau Athletic continued their excellent start to the league campaign with a hard-earned 22–14 victory away to Caerau Ely.

The Green and Golds produced another determined performance to secure their third league victory of the season and maintain their unbeaten record in Division Five East Central.

Tries from Owain Cotter, Travis Warhurst and Harri Jones provided the foundation for the victory, with Warhurst also adding a conversion and Cotter contributing a penalty.

The result represented another important step forward for an Athletic side that has been producing some impressive rugby in the opening weeks of the season.

Travelling away from home is never straightforward, but the visitors showed plenty of character and determination to secure the result against a competitive Caerau Ely outfit.

The victory follows their impressive 78–0 success against Old Penarthians in their previous league outing and further underlines the progress being made by the Athletic squad.

Beddau Athletic now sit fourth in the Division Five East Central table with 14 points from three league fixtures, having won all three.

With several sides at the top of the division making strong starts, every point will be important as the season develops.

Youth XV: Abercwmboi 0–55 Beddau Youth

Cardiff Rugby Mid 2 League

Beddau Youth continued their outstanding start to the season with a magnificent 55–0 victory away to Abercwmboi.

The young Green and Golds produced a dominant display, running in nine tries and keeping their opponents scoreless to maintain their unbeaten league record.

The visitors demonstrated their attacking quality throughout, with nine different players crossing the whitewash in an impressive all-round team performance.

Zak Blacker, Celyn Liddon, Morgan Jenkins, Carter Williams, Jack Evans, Jayden Abercrombie, Tom Parker, Corey Marks and Harrison Lynch-Powell all registered tries.

The conversions were shared between Evan Clark, Taylor Downes and Harrison Lynch-Powell, with Clark and Downes each successful twice and Lynch-Powell adding one.

It was another hugely encouraging afternoon for the club’s young players, who continue to demonstrate the strength and potential of Beddau’s Youth setup.

The victory follows earlier league successes against Llantrisant, Taffs Well and Llantwit Fardre, with the Youth XV now boasting four victories from their opening four league matches.

The latest success leaves Beddau sitting proudly at the top of the Cardiff Rugby Mid 2 League table with 19 points.

With confidence growing and performances continuing to improve, the young Green and Golds have given themselves an excellent platform on which to build for the remainder of the campaign.
