Wet, Windy…. and History

Jamie Willis25 Jan - 17:40

It will be a weekend that will be remembered for a long time in our Club.

Despite both the Athletic and Youth XV home games against St Peters and Senghenydd respectively being postponed due to waterlogged grounds, there was plenty to rejoice as the 1st XV won at Newbridge to take top spot in the WRU Admiral Community Premiership.

The green and golds travelled to the Welfare ground for a game that was postponed two weeks ago due to a waterlogged ground and were fortunate that the game didn’t again fall foul to the adverse weather.

The hosts with a different squad to that who travelled to Mount Pleasant Park earlier in the season really started well and after just ten minutes took the lead with a deserved converted try.

The next thirty minutes remained nip and tuck with the hosts going in at the interval with a 7-0 lead.

Again the Gwent Club came back out after the break firing and got further into the lead with another try, which went unconverted.

This really fired Beddau into action and they threw everything at their hosts.

The Newbridge defence was finally broken as Ethan Coombes crashed over for a try from a driving line out for a score converted by outside half Ollie Wilde.

Beddau were now on the ascendancy and eleven minutes later it was Coombes who came out from under another impressive forward drive to claim an important try which was again converted by Wilde to give the visitors the lead for the first time.

As the conditions deteriorated massively Beddau kept pressure on their opponents and in the last ten minutes they were awarded two kickable penalties of which one was converted by Cody Baker to get Beddau over the line with a 17-12 win.

This really was a hard fought win in tough conditions against a motivated home team.

The victory saluted an incredible milestone for the Club as they hit the pinnacle of the Community game for the first time in their proud history.

The New Culture Coffee Shop Man of the Match was Sam Tiley.

Head coach Lee Davies will not let the players enjoy the plaudits for too long that is for sure as they will need to prepare for another Gwent away day next Saturday at Cross Keys.

For now though all those associated, past and present, can be proud of this teams achievements and look forward to an exciting end of season.
