Wilde Wonder / Weekend Round Up

Wilde Wonder / Weekend Round Up

Jamie Willis13 Oct - 17:21

Beddau's incredible start in the WRU Admiral National leagues continued over the weekend as both the 1st XV and Athletic XV recorded outstanding wins.

The 1st XV recorded arguably their greatest win at the Gnoll where they lowered the colours of Neath.

The green and golds were certainly not in awe of their illustrious opponents and for large parts of the game were in control.

A magical long break by Cody Baker at the end of the first period was stopped just short of the line but the ball was recycled fast to allow Centre Tyler Wells to crash over. Callum Wheeler added the extras to give Beddau a 7-0 half time lead.

The green and golds continued to attack after the interval and were unlucky to be on the wrong end of two try scoring decisions.

Neath threw everything at Beddau in the closing stages, and they looked like they had rescued a share of the spoils when they went over for a converted try in the 76th minute.

But Beddau were not done, and they came back fighting. They were rewarded deep into injury time with a long-range penalty. Up stepped Ollie Wilde, and the young outside half delivered the ball straight through the posts to the delight of the large Beddau following.

This was a huge win that was certainly deserved. The effort of the whole squad was outstanding.

It turned out to be a hugely memorable day for Ethan Coombes and Sam Edwards who celebrated their 150th and 100th game respectively for the 1st XV.

Head coach Lee Davies was ecstatic with the performance and wanted it to be noted how amazing and thankful the playing group were to the supporters who were incredible throughout.

Next up is Llanelli Wanderers at Mount Pleasant Park on Saturday. This will be the first league meeting between the Clubs but there is the tough memory of last season's WRU Cup exit to the visitors that still needs to be cleared from the players mind.

The Athletic went to the top of Division Six East Central after a hard fought 17-8 win against a good Tondu outfit at MPP.

The visitors were leading 8-0 going into the final quarter of the game and causing Beddau a few problems.

But once again the spirit in the group shone through with Efan Jones going over for a try before they were awarded a penalty try. Owain Cotter added a conversion and a penalty to get Beddau over the line.

The tough league games are coming thick and fast now for the Athletic. This Saturday they make the trip to St Peters Athletic.

On Friday evening, the Colliers (3rd XV) travelled to Caerphilly to take on a strong Athletic outfit.

Despite a strong performance orchestrated by scrum half and man of the match Luke Davies, the hosts ran out 12-5 winners.

Harri Abercrombie got Beddau's sole score with a second half try.

This weekend the Miners will welcome near neighbours Llantrisant to Yorkdale in a Mid District league fixture.

The Youth were without a game this weekend, but they too are also involved in a local derby this weekend at Llantwit Fardre.
